University of Pisa Reduces the MRI Examination Process

University of Pisa CIO Antonio Cisternino discusses a collaboration with Imago 7 to use Intel® Optane™ technology to reduce the MRI examination process by expanding on the memory needed to support MRI undersampling techniques.

Transcript

We collaborate with a medical Foundation called Imago 7, doing research on MRI, especially in degenerative diseases of brain. Now a researcher in there came out with the idea of under-sampling, so, getting less data from the machine, and filling the gaps by using precomputed tables. This approach is effective as long as you have a lot of memory. But actually, current system does not allow the right amount of memory. So, we try to expand this memory using Intel Optane technology.

We started deploying SSD drives and NVME drives. And at last, too, we decided to install Intel Optane s in our scientific computing environment. The Intel Optane drives have low latency and fast speed. And we reach a lot of improvement in our scientific computation.

You can shrink down, to two minutes, an examination process that took 40 minutes before. So, this is really good for patients.
