Why does the PowerPlay Power Analyzer report an extremely high current for VCCR_GXB in the Quartus II software versions 12.0 and 12.1?

    Description

    Due to a problem in the Quartus® II software versions 12.0 and later, you may see an extremely high current estimate for the VCCR_GXB supply when using the PowerPlay Power Analyzer. The current will be incorrectly estimated and reported to be millions of amps. This problem occurs when using a value change dump (.vcd) file to obtain toggle rate information from simulation vectors. This problem affects designs targeting Stratix® V devices.

    Resolution

    To obtain a more accurate power estimation for your design, first locate the power estimate for VCCR_GXB. Use the Current Drawn from Voltage Supplies Summary section of the PowerPlay Power Analyzer report to obtain the total current drawn for VCCR_GXBL and VCCR_GXBR. Subtract this current from the overall estimation results.

    To obtain a more accurate power estimation for VCCR_GXB, use the PowerPlay Early Power Estimator or use the toggle rate entry method in the PowerPlay Power Analyzer. Add this value to the overall power estimation of the design.

    This problem is fixed beginning with the Quartus II software version 12.1.
