Can the SDM firmware cause an external voltage regulator to apply an incorrect voltage?

Environment

  • Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

Due to a problem in the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro edition versions 20.1 to 20.4, you may see that the voltage ID enabled voltage regulators (VR) applies a voltage beyond the device recommended operating conditions for Vcc and Vccp.

This problem may occur in the following conditions

    • The device is an Intel® Stratix® 10 FPGA with SmartVID enabled
    • The FPGA is master on the PMBus
      • Slave mode is not affected
    • VR using Direct Mode with m, b (non-zero value), R coefficient
      • Linear Mode is not affected
    • Unit is in Volts
      • Unit in Millivolts(mV) is not affected
    Resolution

This problem is fixed starting with the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition software version 21.1.
