Why does the Intel® FPGA Power and Thermal Calculator (PTC) shows high power estimations for High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) Interface Intel® FPGA devices?

Environment

  • Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition
  • BUILT IN - ARTICLE INTRO SECOND COMPONENT
    Description

In the Intel® FPGA Power and Thermal Calculator (PTC) version 20.4 and earlier, the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) Interface power model is conservative and assumes the worst-case memory usage profile. It may overestimate HBM2 power for the user workload.

    Resolution

In the future release of Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software, the High Bandwidth Memory (HBM2) Interface power model will use the typical memory usage profile in Intel® FPGA Power and Thermal Calculator (PTC).

This problem is fixed starting with the Intel® Quartus® Prime Pro Edition Software version 21.3.
